Copyright advice service

by admin last modified 2008-10-01 16:28
Who

Our advice service is primarily for:

  • professional creators, such as writers, artists, photographers, songwriters, film makers;
  • arts organisations such as theatres, galleries and museums;
  • affiliated organisations (staff and members)
We can also give advice to people from:
  • educational institutions and
  • libraries.
If you are not one of the above, go to our Copyright Information page. If you need legal advice, a law society can refer you to a specialist lawyer.
What

Our staff lawyers can give preliminary advice on a range of matters, such as ownership of copyright, infringement of copyight, and copyright contracts. We are not not always able to assist, and in some cases you may need further advice or assistance from elsewhere.

We don't give advice about:

  • an issue answered in an information sheet or elsewhere on our website: see our Copyright Information page.
  • issues other than copyright;
  • computer software;
  • the law in other countries; or
  • a hypothetical situation (such as a question in a student assignment)

We don't give advice to a person who:
  • has already sought legal advice; or
  • is in a dispute with another person to whom we have given legal advice.

We also don't
  • represent people in disputes or run court actions;
  • represent people in contract negotiations (for example, with a publisher);
  • draft contracts, assess contracts drafted by an enquirer, or assist with drafting contracts
How
  • Make an online enquiry. We respond to most enquiries within 1 to 5 working days.
