Who this training is for

If your work involves copyright—you might be a creator (such as a writer, photographer, designer or architect), or an arts manager, adviser or lawyer, or you might work for a cultural institution (such as a gallery or museum)—these sessions are for you.

Session 3 is for people who have attended the first two sessions, or otherwise have an understanding of copyright principles.

If you are a lawyer, you may be entitled to claim these seminars as part of your mandatory continuing legal education.

The program

Session 1: Copyright essentials

11:00am to 1:00pm ($100)

  • what copyright protects
  • the scope of the copyright owner’s rights
  • duration of copyright and term extension
  • who owns copyright
  • licensing and assigning rights
  • infringement of copyright: actions and remedies
  • copyright collecting societies: what they do
  • Australia/US Free Trade Agreement amendments

Session 2: Moral rights

2:00pm to 3:30pm ($90)

  • when a creator or performer must be attributed
  • “derogatory treatment” of a work or performance
  •  when non-attribution or derogatory treatment is “reasonable”
  • consent to non-attribution or derogatory treatment
  • differences for employees and freelancers
  • special rules for films
  • consequences of breaching moral rights
  • practical issues for architecture, advertising, publishing, film, sound recordings
  • how to manage moral rights

Session 2: Recent developments

4:00pm to 5:00pm ($80)

  • recent & proposed changes to the law
  • recent cases
  • current reviews of law & policy
  • international developments
  • Australia/US Free Trade Agreement

Refreshments

We provide light refreshments between the morning sessions, but not lunch.  

Free book offer

If you individually attend four training sessions and give us a completed feedback form, we'll send you one of our books for free (title of your choice). We'll send your book as soon as we've received your feedback form and payment for the training.

Bookings & cancellations

Bookings: Please book as early as possible so we can confirm your place and advise you of any changes to advertised details.
Cancellations & refunds: We refund 100% of the fee if you cancel 4 or more working days before the training session, and 50% if you cancel 1 to 3 working days before (but not if you cancel on the day).
Non-attendance: If you register for a training session but do not attend, we may invoice you for the fee unless you cancel 4 or more working days before the training session.
