Report on Contemporary Visual Art and Craft released

by admin last modified 2008-12-10 12:10
On 6 September 2002, the Federal Government released the report of the Contemporary Visual Arts and Crafts Inquiry ("the Myer Inquiry"). The wide-ranging Inquiry included consideration of copyright and moral rights issues relevant to the visual arts and to craft.

The report recommends that the government introduce a resale royalty right for visual artists and craft practitioners. It addresses issues for indigenous communities and artists, and recommends several reforms including extension of moral rights provisions to apply to indigenous communities as well as to individuals. Other recommendationsinclude review of the fair dealing and other exceptions to infringement as they apply to artistic works; and a recommendation against giving museums, galleries and auction houses the right to copy and communicate works in their collections without requiring permission from the copyright owners.
