This 2 hour session is a comprehensive overview of Australian copyright law specifically for librarians, archivists, and gallery and museum curators. In this session, we will cover all the essentials including; what is copyright, what it protects and how, copyright ownership and licensing, general and collection-specific copyright exceptions, copyright infringement and managing risk, moral rights and moral rights infringement. This session will also take you through the recent amendments made to the Copyright Act that impact libraries and cultural collections. Attendance of this session is highly recommended to have a grounded understanding for the remaining sessions.

This practical session runs for 1 hour and 45 minutes and takes you through the copyright issues around managing and using collection material. Topics covered include; applying copyright exceptions to administer, preserve and digitise material, using collection material on advertising and merchandise, using collection material on websites and social media, dealing with copyright around donated material, electronic subscription agreements and considerations.

Topics covered include; using copyright exceptions to create and supply research copies, electronic lending dos and don’ts, considerations around exhibitions, film screenings, and other public activities, running and recording Story Time and other classes

The final 2-hour session explores the ways libraries, archives, galleries and museums can manage and minimise the risk of copyright infringement. Part seminar and part workshop, attendees will be taken through the following topics; the different levels of risk exposure, common problems and how to manage them, your responsibility versus client responsibility, managing risk on websites and social media, safe harbour provisions and upcoming law reform
